The Hungarian revolution of 1848 indicates Slovak nationalist leaders took the side of Austrians to promote their seperation from the "Kingdom of Hungary" within the Austrian monarchy.

After World War 1 the Slovak cause formed an independent republic with the Czechs and the Austrian-Hungarian federation disolved. At that time an independent repubilic of Czechoslovakia was formed. After WW2, the Soviets held control of the region.

Since 1993 it has been known as "Slovakia" breaking off federation with the Czech Republic.
